University Cup 2025: 197 Students Take the Court in the Second Edition

With the courts alive with spirited play and dynamic performances, the second edition of the University Cup for Basketball and Volleyball concluded on a high note. Organized by Sharjah Women’s Sports in collaboration with the American University of Sharjah—and supported by the Sharjah Commerce & Tourism Development Authority (Gold Sponsor), Sharjah Cooperative Society, and Beeah Group (Silver Sponsors)—the tournament brought together 197 female students from eight universities and colleges across the UAE.

A Campus Stage Fueled by Sportsmanship

This year’s edition offered far more than a competitive arena; it created a vibrant space where athletic performance, student enthusiasm, and community engagement merged seamlessly. The tournament reflected the Organization’s continued mission to promote sports as a meaningful part of student life—encouraging young women to train, compete, and grow within an empowering academic environment.

University of Sharjah Claims Both Titles

Showcasing determination and exceptional teamwork, the University of Sharjah secured first place in both basketball and volleyball.

In basketball, AUS clinched second place, followed by Bath Spa University Academic Centre RAK in third.
In volleyball, Bath Spa University Academic Centre RAK placed second, with AUS completing the podium in third place.

University Sports… An Investment in the Future

Noura Al Hamar, Head of Community Events at Sharjah Women’s Sports, underscored the significance of the tournament within the Organization’s strategic objectives, saying:

“The University Cup reflects our vision of making sports a natural part of students’ daily lives—instilling teamwork, positive competition, and long-term commitment on campus. Through these tournaments, we continue building sustainable partnerships with academic institutions, widening the base of active female athletes, and identifying promising talents across multiple disciplines.”

She added:

“For us, sports are more than a competitive pursuit. They are a way of life that builds belonging, responsibility, and leadership. Events like this empower young women to develop both their character and their aspirations.”

Voices from the Court

Susan Saleh, coach at the American University of Sharjah, described the event as a catalyst for growth:

“The atmosphere was full of excitement and challenge—everyone wanted to excel. Tournaments like this motivate students to adopt sports as part of their lifestyle and nurture teamwork and discipline.”

From the volleyball court, Safiya Idris of Al Qasimia University reflected on her debut participation:

“We were proud to represent our university in a tournament bringing together so many competitive teams. The matches were intense and inspiring. Most importantly, we gained new experience in team play and discipline.”

Shared Vision and Unified Efforts

Her Excellency Moza Al Shamsi, Director of Sharjah Women’s Sports, emphasized the long-term purpose behind such initiatives:

“We believe that a thriving sports culture begins in classrooms and lecture halls—these institutions are where champions are discovered and shaped. By embedding regular physical activity into student life, we support young women in developing confidence and ambition within a motivating university environment.”

She highlighted the role of partners:

“In collaboration with our sponsors and academic partners, we ensured that the top-performing teams received financial awards—recognition that motivates continued participation and healthy competition in future editions.”

Shaimaa Bin Talayeh, Vice Chancellor for Student Experience at AUS, echoed this sentiment:

“Sports are essential to the education we offer. They build confidence, discipline, and teamwork—qualities that define our students academically and professionally, and in their service to the community.”

A Tournament Concludes, A Vision Continues

The conclusion of this year’s University Cup reaffirmed Sharjah Women’s Sports’ commitment to nurturing a generation that views sports as a pathway to empowerment and personal growth. The tournament’s second edition was more than an event; it was a testament to the belief that investing in university athletics is investing in the future— in young women ready to lead, compete, and excel.
