SWS and University of Sharjah Sign MoU to Advance Sports Science Research
Sharjah Women’s Sports (SWS) and the University of Sharjah (UoS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing scientific research in sports sciences, providing training opportunities for university students, and fostering an integrated sports environment.
The agreement was signed by Her Excellency Hanan Al Mahmoud, Vice Chairperson of SWS, and His Excellency Prof. Hamid Mjul Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, reaffirming their commitment to collaborative efforts in sports sector development and leveraging academic research capabilities.
A Partnership for Research and Sports Training
The MoU aims to provide researchers and graduate students with opportunities to conduct joint studies in sports sciences, benefiting from scientific laboratories and advanced research facilities. It also includes workshops, scientific events, and practical training opportunities in areas such as physical assessments, sports nutrition, athletic rehabilitation, and mental preparation for athletes.
Leadership Perspectives on the Collaboration
Her Excellency Hanan Al Mahmoud emphasized that scientific research is the key to optimizing local talent development, ensuring efficient resource allocation. She stated:"Scientific research allows us to analyze community needs and conduct precise assessments that guide the sustainable growth of the sports sector. This aligns with the visionary leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, who has championed women's sports and positioned research as a cornerstone for its development."
She added:"The University of Sharjah is a leading academic institution known for its diverse and high-quality research initiatives, making it an ideal strategic partner. Through this collaboration, we aim to integrate our extensive database of local sports data and performance metrics with academic research, creating effective strategies that drive real progress, particularly in women's sports."
In response, His Excellency Prof. Hamid Mjul Al Naimiy conveyed greetings from His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, and highlighted the significance of the MoU in advancing research across multiple fields. He reiterated the university’s commitment to supporting SWS by providing access to research centers, scientific journals, and collaborative research opportunities.
He also shared UoS’s latest research statistics and global rankings, emphasizing the institution's role in producing high-impact research across various disciplines.
Scientific Research as a Driver for Athletic Development
Dr.Mokhtar Chtara, Director of the Scientific Center For Research And Sports Development Center at SWS, described the MoU as a pivotal step toward creating a research-driven sports ecosystem. He stated:"Sports research must extend beyond theoretical studies to include precise data-driven evaluations that reflect the unique physiological and psychological characteristics of athletes in our region. This MoU will enable researchers to leverage advanced physiological assessments, AI-powered sports analytics, and athlete mental training programs, significantly enhancing athletic performance through scientific advancements."
He further emphasized that the Scientific Research Center at SWS will support this partnership by analyzing data through advanced methodologies, organizing specialized scientific seminars, and developing more efficient and locally relevant sports strategies.
Dr. Amina Al Marzouqi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at UoS, stressed the importance of integrating sports into daily life as a fundamental aspect of enhancing quality of life. She noted that imported fitness and health measurement standards may not always accurately reflect the biological and lifestyle-specific needs of UAE residents. Through this MoU, researchers will be able to develop localized assessment criteria, producing more precise data to support scientific studies and inform effective sports policies.
A Long-Term Commitment to Sports Development
The agreement, set for two years with an option for renewal, focuses on strengthening scientific research, providing practical training for students, and contributing to the advancement of women’s sports.
This MoU builds upon previous collaborations between SWS and UoS, including the university’s support for the “Excel” International Conference on Women’s Sports in Sharjah. The conference, held in February 2024 alongside the 7th Arab Women Sports Tournament, was the first international conference on women’s sports medicine and sciences, setting the foundation for future initiatives aimed at advancing women’s athletic performance through research and innovation.
